How to use the SCAMPER prompts template

Start a board from it
Use this template opens a new Freero board with the SCAMPER prompts template on it (sign up free first). On a board you already have, open Templates in the toolbar and search for “SCAMPER prompts”.
Follow the instruction on the board
“Pick one thing to improve and write it at the top. Spend three minutes per row; quantity first, judge later.”
Fill in each part
- Substitute: what could we swap out? A material, a step, a person, a channel.
- Combine: what could work together? Merge two products, services or steps into one.
- Adapt: what works elsewhere that we could borrow? Look at other industries and nature.
- Resize: what if it were bigger, smaller or more often? Change the scale, frequency or strength.
- Repurpose: who else could use it, or for what? New users, new occasions, new markets.
- Remove: what could we leave out? Simplify until it hurts, then add one thing back.
- Reverse: what if we did it the other way round? Flip the order, the roles or the assumption.
Bring your team and your agents
Invite people to the board or share a link, and work on it together live. The timer is in the top bar, private mode and voting in the board menu, and Claude or ChatGPT can join through Freero’s MCP server.

Work on it with an AI agent

Connect an assistant once and it works on the board with you, with your permissions: by default it reads and proposes, and people decide.

You ask: “Fill in the SCAMPER prompts board from these notes.”
What happens It reads the board, then proposes sticky notes for it. Nothing changes until someone on the board accepts them.
You ask: “Group what we wrote into themes and list the actions.”
What happens It proposes clusters with a title each and task cards for the actions, labelled with its name and yours.

Brainstorming: Ideas on sticky notes, written privately against a timer, clustered and dot-voted down to the few worth trying.

Random word stimulus
Break out of the obvious answers by forcing a link between your problem and a word picked at random.
Borrowed ideas
Ask how other industries would solve your problem, then steal their best moves on purpose.
Attribute listing
Break a product into its attributes (size, material, price, how it is used) and change one attribute at a time to find new versions.
Brainwriting rounds
Generate ideas in writing instead of out loud: each person writes ideas, then builds on their neighbour’s, round after round.
Assumption busting
List what everyone takes for granted about a problem, flip each assumption, and see which flips open up new ideas.
Constraint brainstorm
Generate ideas under a deliberately harsh limit (no budget, one week, no screens) to shake loose solutions nobody had tried.
