Storage

S3-compatible storage

A self-hosted Freero keeps uploads in any S3-compatible bucket.

Set up by the server’s operator

What it does

Point a self-hosted Freero at Amazon S3 or any S3-compatible service, such as MinIO, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2 or DigitalOcean Spaces, and uploaded files and board thumbnails go there instead of the local disk. Boards keep referencing files the same way, so switching never rewrites them.

Server-side encryption (SSE-S3 or SSE-KMS) can be requested for every object, and raster images can be served from a public bucket address or CDN.

Connect S3-compatible storage

  1. Step 1

Set S3_BUCKET, S3_ACCESS_KEY_ID and S3_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY (and S3_ENDPOINT for a service other than AWS).

  2. Step 2

Restart the server; copy files uploaded before the switch to the bucket.

Set by the server’s operator in its environment.

In Freero, Apps & agents → S3-compatible storage takes you straight to this step.
